This page is dedicated to providing insightful articles, videos, and content sourced directly from refuge biologists, fire crews, and research partners.
Through extensive interviews and on-site involvement, our goal is to educate and inform the Texas Hill Country community about prescribed fire operations, their ecological benefits, and safety practices, fostering greater understanding and collaboration within our local environment.
Prescribed fire, or controlled burning, is a critical land management tool that benefits the environment, ecology, and wildlife. By mimicking natural fire cycles, these carefully planned burns reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires by clearing out excess vegetation and underbrush. This helps maintain healthy forests, grasslands, and prairies, promoting the growth of native plants while suppressing invasive species that can choke out natural habitats.
Join us as we follow the Fire Crew at Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge as they Plan, Prepare, then Burn. Learn why prescribed burning is a critical tool for fuel reduction and habitat restoration.
