Tour Candlelight Ranch

Please join us for a winter nature hike at Candlelight Ranch, a partner of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, and a special place not generally open to the public.

You will learn more about the mission of Candlelight, which is to provide therapeutic and educational nature-based experiences to enrich the lives of at-risk youth and children with disabilities. You will also simultaneously experience the natural beauty of its setting, which is similar to what you would find on the Refuge. While the flora of Candlelight will not be in bloom since it is winter, there will still be a lot to see and learn about.

For example, you will learn what its typical vegetation looks like when it goes to seed, and we will discuss seed gathering. We will also be on the lookout for winter birds not seen during other times of the year as well as other birds.

After we finish our outside nature exploration, the hike leaders will head to nearby Flat Creek Winery for lunch and all participants who are hungry and interested are invited to join them (or peel off if they are otherwise inclined). So come out and get some exercise, enjoy nature and learn about this special Refuge partner and neighbor.

When Saturday, February 24, 2018

Time:  9:00 to Noonish (this is just an estimate: the length of the hike could be slightly shorter or longer and people can peel off depending on their schedules)

What to wear/ bring: Dress appropriately for an outside activity. Bring sunblock, water, snacks and binoculars

Friends members & guest will be given priority until January 26
