The pristine hill country habitat and native wildlife found on the refuge need people to speak up for them. Can you be the voice for the refuge?

Friends of Balcones works hand in hand with the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge to protect wildlife and defend the refuge from harm. Our collective impact is made stronger through participation of individuals like you. Sign up for our quarterly newsletter here or revisit this page to learn more about actions you can take to protect the land, water and wildlife in and around the refuge.

BE A VOICE FOR THE REFUGE!

There are three main issues the Friends of Balcones will always advocate for:

    • Adequate federal funding of the National Wildlife Refuge System;
    • Preservation and protection of undeveloped lands in the hill country, and;
    • Acquisition of pristine habitat for our native Texas bird the golden-cheeked warbler

HOW CAN YOU TAKE ACTION TODAY?

Submit a letter to the U.S Senate by June 10, 2022 to help secure adequate funding for the National Wildlife Refuge System!

The vast majority of funding for the National Wildlife Refuge System comes from the Congressional appropriations process. Unfortunately, the Refuge System's budget has not adequately risen over the last 10 years to meet the demands of staffing and maintenance needs required to protect the incredibly rich and diverse wildlife habitat of each unit. In fact, since 2010, the Refuge System has lost 25% of staff.

Therefore, we need people like you to help support the Refuge System by submitting a letter to the Senate requesting an increase in funding for the Refuge Systems to $712 million for fiscal year 2023.

Click HERE to learn more from the National Refuge Association on how to submit a letter and some key talking points.

Your help is greatly appreciated!

THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING UP FOR THE REFUGE!
