STAR PARTY!

The Friends of Balcones Canyonlands NWR is very excited to announce we have made arrangements with Joyce Lynch of the Austin Astronomical Society to host a Star Party with us at the beautiful Flying X Ranch, a portion of Balcones Canyonlands NWR that is not normally open to the public. (It's worth the trip just to see this place!)

We will be participating in stargazing and viewing bright celestial objects. It will not be a perfect evening since the moon will be full, but we should get a good look at it also.

Note we will be back to Central Standard Time on Nov. 9. The sun will set at 5:37 pm. so you should have at least some available light as you proceed to Flying X Ranch. Once you get there, you will turn west off FM 1174 and proceed through the gate. When you arrive at the top of the hill, please turn off your headlights to preserve night vision and continue to the house.

We want to discourage the use of white flashlights but red is OK. You can get red on your cell phone, "there's an app for that". Bring binoculars, bird scopes, telescopes or whatever else you use to view distant objects. You will be able to look through the sophisticated telescopes provided by Austin Astronomical Society and Friends of Balcones NWR.
