Scarlet Clematis - A Native Beauty

Monday, July 09, 2012 1:02 PM | Jim Mueller (Administrator)

Our native scarlet clematis, or red leatherflower, will stop you in your tracks with its beauty. Here is a photo of one from the refuge in an area we have cleared and burned to re-establish habitat for black-capped vireos.

Thanks for this gorgeous photograph, Jim. Didn't this fantastic little endemic, like so many of our wildflowers, have a spectacular year after a warm winter and some rain? What tough troopers they are to hunker down and survive the horrible conditions they've been enduring the last few years!
